The construction of the new terminal building began in March 2022, and it is designed to handle 1.5 million passengers a year and to simultaneously handle six aircraft.
– We have to adopt measures for the growth of passenger traffic, because Air Serbia is flying more frequently from Nis, and we especially have to develop cargo traffic, because it can bring a lot of money and companies – the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, said and added that cargo traffic could be considered, given the growth of industrial production.
He estimated that, if Nis had a logistic center and cargo, it would be an enormous opportunity for the city’s development.
– Serbia is negotiating with low-cost companies about them flying from Nis – Vucic pointed out.
He said that the specialized international exhibition EXPO, to be held in Belgrade in 2027, would also be significant for Nis, because plenty of passengers would use the Nis Airport when visiting the exhibits, and added that the airport in Ladjevci would be quite busy as well.
According to Vucic, last year, the Nis Airport handled 488,000 passengers, and in 2025, over half a million passengers are expected. The plan is for the old terminal building to be demolished and for a new facility, which will be an extension of the new terminal building, to be built in its place.
The new terminal building, with an area of 7,500 square meters, has 10 check-in counters, a free shop on 400 square meters, office spaces for airline companies, rent-a-car agencies, a business club, a VIP section, and the upper floor features commercial space, restaurants and bars.
The new parking lot at the airport has 580 parking spaces for passenger vehicles, with a special part for people with disabilities, as well as a VIP section, 103 spaces for trucks, five chargers for electric vehicles and a green area with 200 saplings.
In 2018, by a majority vote at the City Assembly of Nis, the Nis Airport went into the state’s ownership.
Within the summer flight schedule, flights are carried out from that airport to 13 regular destinations and there are two charter routes, and flights are carried out by Air Serbia, Ryanair and Wizz Air.
